HELLDIVERS is a top-down cooperative shooter developed by Swedish studio Arrowhead Game Studios. Originally released on PlayStation platforms in 2015, it later launched on PC (Steam) in 2023. Set against the satirical, totalitarian backdrop of the "Super Earth Federation," players take on the role of elite mobile infantry soldiers nicknamed "Helldivers," undertaking various dangerous missions to resist alien invasions. The "friendly fire" mechanic adds significant unpredictability, requiring careful coordination to avoid being sent back to the respawn point by a teammate's stray bullet or explosion.

Gameplay

Mission Flow

At the start of each mission, players select their gear and weapons before descending to the mission planet via drop pod. Objectives are diverse, including eliminating specific enemies, escorting key items, activating terminals, and destroying enemy facilities. After completing the primary objective, players must reach an extraction point and await the rescue shuttle while fending off waves of enemy reinforcements. Successful extraction rewards players with experience and resources based on their performance.

Enemy Types

The game features two primary enemy factions: the Bugs and the Cyborgs. The Bugs include small Workers, leaping Hunters, acid-spitting Brood Commanders, and massive Behemoths, excelling in close-quarters combat and overwhelming numbers. The Cyborgs consist of various automated weapon platforms, drones, and heavy mechs, known for their powerful and accurate firepower. Different enemies require distinct tactics and weapon choices to counter effectively.

Stratagem System

The game's unique "Stratagem" system allows players to call in various forms of battlefield support, including airstrikes, artillery barrages, supply drops, and vehicle deliveries. Players must manage the battlefield situation by expending limited ammunition and a finite number of calls. Strategic use of Stratagems is often key to survival in high-difficulty missions.

Difficulty and Challenge

The game features multiple difficulty levels, ranging from "Training" to "Suicide Mission" across a total of 9 tiers. As difficulty increases, enemy numbers, attack strength, and mission complexity rise significantly. At higher difficulties, even the most skilled players require close teamwork, precise tactical execution, and a bit of luck to complete objectives, contributing to the game's high replay value and sense of accomplishment.
