Hardspace: Shipbreaker
Game Introduction
Hardspace: Shipbreaker is a space simulation salvage game developed by Black Forge Games and published by Focus Home Interactive. Players assume the role of a new employee at the Lynx Corporation, tasked with dismantling and recycling derelict spacecraft in a zero-gravity environment. While the job may seem straightforward, it is fraught with peril—every ship harbors lethal hazards such as fuel leaks, pressure vessel explosions, and toxic substance releases. Players must carefully navigate these dangers while earning income to gradually pay off the massive training debt incurred upon employment.
Game Features
- Immersive Zero-G Environment: Utilizing an advanced physics engine, the game simulates a realistic zero-gravity space environment. Players can freely float, rotate, and use various professional tools for precise dismantling operations, delivering a unique space-work experience.
- Diverse Ship Variety: The game features dozens of different ship types, ranging from small shuttles to massive cargo freighters. Each vessel has a unique structure and internal layout, providing continuous novelty and challenge to the salvage process.
- Danger and Opportunity: Salvage operations require constant vigilance against various hazards—flammable gas leaks can lead to explosions, uncontrolled high-pressure vessels can cause fatal accidents, and toxic materials must be handled with care. Every decision can lead to vastly different outcomes.
- Career Progression System: As players gain experience, they can unlock higher-grade salvage licenses, qualifying them to handle more complex, dangerous, and valuable ships, gradually evolving from a novice to a veteran Shipbreaker.
- Sci-Fi Aesthetic: The game employs a distinctive cyberpunk sci-fi aesthetic. The rusted hulls of derelict ships, flickering warning lights, and floating debris collectively create an atmosphere of isolated and perilous space.
Gameplay
Players use a grapple to move freely inside and outside the ship, employing cutting tools to dismantle the hull in sections. Dismantling must follow a specific sequence: first, disable the power systems to avoid electrocution hazards; then, vent high-pressure gases from pressure vessels; next, handle fuel tanks and toxic substance containers; and finally, salvage high-value electronic equipment and rare metals. Salvaged materials can be sold to pay off debt and purchase upgraded equipment. The game offers a variety of tools, including laser cutters, plasma torches, and high-pressure water jets, each with specific uses and operational techniques. After completing a salvage job, the ship's remains are towed into a recycling furnace for processing. Players must find a balance between efficiency and safety—completing tasks quickly yields bonus rewards, but rushing can lead to catastrophic accidents.
